Sometimes when Ted misbehaves it becomes necessary to deport him for a spell so he can do some thinking about where he went wrong. This was the case last week when he wrongly accused Mark of stealing his cowboy hat. He really hurt Mark’s feelings. After all, was it not Mark who served as the de facto best man at Ted’s wedding? Was it not Mark who pushed Ted just enough when it came time to complete his woodworking project? (The answer is yes, btw.)
So recognizing a teaching moment when I see one, I step between the two and immediately send Ted to Spain for a time out. Today’s his first day back, and though the silence is awkward, it’s necessary that I mete out harsh discipline from time to time. But look at the result: Ted made this lovely daily catch with halibut, saffron, fresh tomatoes, sherry, garlic, chorizo, littlenecks and grilled bread, all of which he smuggled into the country in his Louis Vuitton duffle bag that he bought for pennies in Shanghai a couple of years ago.
